The technology and manufacturing of varistors in China have achieved leapfrog development, evolving from non-existence to maturity and from weakness to strength. This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the wisdom, hard work, and lifelong dedication of generations of industry experts and predecessors. We pay tribute to these pioneering forerunners!
Looking back at the formulation of the national standard GB/T 18802.331-2024 for varistors, it represents the collective wisdom of numerous industry seniors and technical authorities, including Fei Zihao, Zhang Nanfa, Zhou Qibin, Huang Yong, Tian Enwen, Chen Jingliang, Chen Huizhen, Yao Xueling, Ye Linlong, and Zeng Qinglong. For decades, they have made continuous breakthroughs in material formulas, process optimization, and reliability testing, laying a solid foundation for the domestic substitution, industrial application, cost reduction, and efficiency improvement of China's varistors. Through years of persistence and exploration, they overcame core challenges in material formulas under simple experimental conditions, enabling the performance of domestic Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) to match that of international brands. They established a scientific framework for testing systems, laying the groundwork for industry quality control, and fostered an echelon of industry talents to ensure the inheritance of accumulated technical expertise.
The memory of China's early reliance on imported varistor technology remains vivid. As those engaged in the varistor industry, we must always remember this history, and more importantly, the outstanding contributions of generations of industry experts. They pioneered the innovation model integrating industry, academia, and research, and set industry benchmarks with their rigorous academic attitude. It is precisely their commitment to "sitting through years of painstaking research" that has led to the vigorous development of China's varistor industry and technology today, enabling the industry to achieve leapfrog progress—from following international trends to keeping pace, and finally taking the lead.
The arduous journey of industry experts and predecessors—from laboratories to production lines, and from university research to industrial application—remains fresh in our minds. Today, domestic MOVs have been widely used in power, communications, new energy, automotive, and other fields, and have transitioned from being followers to leaders: Chinese enterprises have gradually surpassed international competitors in key indicators such as high energy density, low residual voltage, and long service life; and from being standard implementers to standard setters: the release of GB/T 18802.331-2024 marks the further enhancement of China's varistor technology authority in the international standard system.
As the saying goes, "One generation plants the trees, and another enjoys the shade." For years, countless expert predecessors have devoted themselves to innovative breakthroughs in four key areas of MOVs, working tirelessly day and night.
First, continuous innovation in materials. Optimizing formulas to improve the consistency of varistor voltage; developing new doping technologies through experiments to enhance resistance to high-current impacts; exploring the replacement of silver paste with copper electrodes to reduce the manufacturing cost of varistor chips.
Second, continuous improvement and upgrading of production processes. Adopting precision tape casting technology to enhance product uniformity; introducing AI-enabled intelligent sintering control to optimize microstructures; promoting the upgrading of automated production equipment to improve the first-pass yield rate.
Third, emphasizing the integration of industry, academia, and research. Collaborating with university teams to focus on basic research, achieving new breakthroughs in the micro-mechanisms of materials; strictly controlling quality in the testing process to establish a more scientific evaluation system; optimizing the process flow of manufacturing enterprises to drive the continuous improvement of industrialization levels.
Fourth, continuous revision and iteration of new national standards to standardize and guide industry standards. Industry standards or national standards are not merely technical documents but the crystallization of industry consensus. For instance, through this standard revision: Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) withstand testing for varistors is added for the first time; an innovative composite stress aging evaluation system is proposed; and special requirements for new energy scenarios are refined.
