The role of lightning protection system and fuse in decoder

Decoders with better brands are equipped with lightning protection systems and fuses to deal with unexpected situations such as lightning strikes and power short circuits.


Most decoders pursuing quality usually have a simple lightning protection system, mainly to prevent the destruction of the decoder by the inductive lightning through the RS485 bus. The price of a standard lightning protection system is several times higher than the decoder itself, so a relatively simple lightning protection system is usually designed.


The lightning protection part should be completed by 2 lightning protection diodes, which can prevent the damage of 600W induction lightning in 10 milliseconds, and can basically resist the attack of common induction lightning. When the induced lightning energy exceeds the withstand limit of the lightning protection diode, the lightning protection diode will burn out and absorb the induced lightning energy at the same time to protect the internal components of the decoder and the power transformer from being damaged. After the detonator is burned out, the decoder can work normally after the detonator is removed, but it no longer has the lightning protection function.


Due to the complex use environment of the decoder, lightning strikes often occur. It is recommended that when choosing a decoder, choose a product with a lightning protection system.


The fuse in the decoder basically has 2 major functions:


1. Prevent the 220V power supply from short-circuiting or causing injury to personnel during the construction process. When the 220V power supply is short-circuited or personnel are electrocuted, the fuse will automatically cut off the 220V power supply to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. Generally, 220 volt fuses will be designed with a transparent plastic case to prevent electric shock caused by the metal connector of the fuse.


2. Prevent the power transformer from being burnt due to short circuit of the camera. This kind of fuse holder is usually not needed.


In some well-designed decoders, there are 3 fuses, and an external output AC 24V output protection is added to prevent the internal components of the decoder and the power transformer from burning due to a short circuit of the pan/tilt.
